Note: I am not a therapist. I work in the social work/mental health field and have a child who has experienced depression and anxiety at multiple levels throughout his life. This article is based solely on my personal and anecdotal experience.

Since COVID, therapy has become a standard practice for many people globally. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 8 people in the world live with a mental disorder. The need for therapists is clear. So, at what point does your need to have a therapist become unnecessary?

If you have ever had a therapist, kudos to you for taking care of yourself. Therapy is, well, therapeutic. Talking to someone about struggles or difficulties you face takes courage and is often so beneficial to your well-being.

And, in order for all that good stuff to work, you should like your therapist. You should enjoy talking with them and appreciate the guidance and support they offer. This kind of relationship seems intuitive, but I have met people who dread therapy, don’t see the point, hate their therapist, and still continue to go.
